4 killed in heavy snowfalls in Nepal

At least four trekkers, including an Israeli and two Polish nationals, were killed in an avalanche on a mountain pass in northern Nepal, authorities said today.

The incident occurred yesterday in Thorang Pass area at an altitude of 5,416 metre, about 400 km North-west of Kathmandu.

Those killed have been identified as two Polish and one Israeli nationals, Ramesh Dhamala, president of Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) said.

One Nepali trekking guide was also killed in the incident, he said.

There were 5 to 6 feet snow fall in the area, according to witnesses.

Nepal Army and Nepal Police personnel including local trekkers have been mobilised to carry out rescue works, he said.
 

Nepal Army has also launched aerial search through a helicopter in the snow storm hit area.

The sudden heavy snow fall in the area is attributed as the effect of Hudhud cyclone, that hit southern India recently.

Heavy rainfalls accompanied by hailstorms lashed the central and western regions of Nepal for the past few days.

The temperature has suddenly dropped in Kathmandu and the surrounding areas after the rainfall yesterday.
