Defending champions in the men's category, Punjab will hope for a repeat of their last year's scintillating performance in front of the home crowd while Indian Railways will look to keep their last five years record in the women's section unblemished.

The event, organised by the BFI and supported by IMG-Reliance, will conclude on January 4 at Guru Nanak Dev Indoor Stadium.

The competition will be played on league-cum-knockout basis and will see the participation of 25 men's and 21 women's teams.

Top 10 teams of the previous year ranking are grouped in Pool A & B (Level I) while the rest of the teams will be playing qualifying matches in Pools C, D, E and F.

The winner will take home a purse of Rs 100,000 while the first and second runners-up will receive Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.

"The senior national basketball championship continues to be one of the most competitive basketball tournaments in India at the highest level and has been growing years after years. I am certain that such competitive championships will sustain the interest of youngsters and will go long way in increasing the popularity of the sport in the country," said Roopam Sharma, CEO, BFI.
