6-yr-old ragpicker drowns in runnel in Meerut

A six-year-old boy drowned in a runnel and his body was recovered after 30-hour arduous rescue operation launched by a joint team of police and municipal corporation personnels near Meerut-Delhi National Highway here.

Johny, who hails from Barabanki, and his elder brother were yesterday collecting garbage when in an effort to remove a splinter of glass from his foot he lost his balance and fell in the runnel, Superintendent of Police Om Prakash said.

On receiving information, teams of police department and municipal corporation launched a rescue operation. His body was today recovered from the runnel near Sanjay Van area after 30 hours, he said.
