660 CPI workers held for attempting to stage demo

About 660 CPI activists were arrested today for attempting to stage a demonstration to protest against the price rise of essential commodities among other things, in the district as part of their state-wide agitation.
They raised slogans against the Centre and Tamil Nadu government for their "failure" to reign in the increase in prices of essential commodities during their agitations at seven places in the district, police said.
Their demands include,declaring Tamil Nadu as drought-hit, relief to the farmers, regularistation of contract labourers in NLC.
The party Central Committe member V S Sundaram, MLA,and other district functionaries participated in the agitations, police said.
