Seven takfiri militants were killed and six others injured during a military raid in the restive Sinai province of Egypt, a security source said.

The raid was launched yesterday after the attack which left 11 Egyptian policemen dead in Sinai's Sheikh Zuwayed region after an improvised explosive device exploded, the source said.

The source added that the army has also arrested 11 suspects and destroyed 16 vehicles, 22 motorcycles and 35 houses and shelters belonging to terrorists.

The militant attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi last year. Many policemen and soldiers have been killed in the attacks.

In July, militants attacked a military checkpoint in Al-Wadi Al-Gedid governorate in southern Egypt, killing 21 Egyptian border guards and injuring four others.

The guards were killed during an exchange of fire with the unknown gunmen which led to an explosion at the checkpoint's ammunition storage.
