81 child labourers rescued

Over 81 children engaged in child labour were rescued by teams of the state labour department during the ongoing child labour eradication week observed in Punjab from June 17.

Disclosing this here today, state Labour Commissioner Harkesh Singh Sidhu said, during the course of campaign, special teams were constituted and surprise raids were conducted at 1,349 different centres.

During the raids, 81 cases of child labour were detected and 71 offenders were booked for the offence, he said adding, among the 81 cases, 39 children were found working in dangerous occupations.

During the observance of the child labour eradication week, special seminars were organised to sensitise the general population so that children of poor families could not be deprived of their childhood, Sidhu added.
