The 12-hour Capital bandh called by All Arunachal Pradesh Student's Union (AAPSU) affected normal life in the Arunachal Pradesh capital today even as the student's body announced extension of the bandh by another 24-hour.
The bandh called by AAPSU to protest non fulfillment of its charter of demands by the state government was total with all business establishments, educational institutions including Central government offices and financial institutions remain closed during the day.
All private and public transport remained off the road. However, a few state government buses were seen plying on the road with escort during the day.
Bandh activists set on fire a vehicle and one motorcycle during the day at Ganga, near here, Additional SP Dipankar Mishra informed.
Bandh supporters also pelted stones at several police vehicles, he said, adding over 20 bandh supporters were rounded up during the day.
AAPSU announced extension of its 12-hour Capital bandh to another 24 hour after police allegedly manhandled its president today.
AAPSU spokesman A Paniya informed that the union had extended the bandh till 5 pm tomorrow after Itanagar SDPO B Kamdak allegedly manhandled union's president Kamta Lapung, when he along with a few leaders went to Itanagar police station to request the authority to release the arrested activists.
"We are demanding the state government to immediately terminate the SDPO and put on suspension all the police personnel involved in manhandling Lapung," Paniya said adding, the union would resort to state-wide bandh within a week if its demands were not fulfilled.
The AAPSU has been demanding the state government to put a ban on appointment of chairmen and vice-chairmen at the cost of state's exchequer and demanding a 'White Paper' on the state's financial condition.
The other demands include improvement of the capital roads, enhancement in students' stipend, improvement in erratic power supply and early release of state government employees' salaries.
