Press Trust of India Ahmedabad
Gujarat Anti Corruption Bureau today claimed to have busted a massive tax evasion racket at Shamlaji check-post on Rajasthan border and arrested 11 people, including an Assistant Commissioner of Commercial Tax.

An ACB team headed by inspector K T Kamaria carried out a secret inspection at Shamlaji check post in Arvalli district early this morning.

The check-post staff was supposed to check whether the vehicles carrying goods have paid the commercial tax by asking for forms issued by the Commercial Tax department.

However, an ACB release here said, "seven trucks were allowed to cross the checkpost (without any checking) by two security guards, who were receiving instructions about the incoming trucks from two middlemen, who were allegedly working at the behest of commercial tax officials".

An FIR was filed against 13 people which include Assistant Commissioner of Commercial Tax (class-1) D B Kamdar, commercial tax officer (class-2) S J Damor, seven truck drivers, two security guards and two middlemen.

ACB has arrested Damor, seven truck drivers, one of the middlemen and the two security guards.

"Kamdar and Damor sit in Ahmedabad office and handle the Shamlaji checkpost operations. Damor was arrested from the city, while others were held from the checkpost. Kamdar is yet to be arrested," said the official.

ACB also recovered a fine of Rs 6.91 lakh from the seven truck drivers.
