On a cycling tour to spread awareness on crimes against women, a Manipur-based activist arrived here today after covering 2000 km in four northeastern states.

"The trend of increased crime, especially rape and ill-treatment towards women and children, is the main reason that motivated me to undertake the journey on cycle," said Sougaijam Bidyalakshmi Leima, from Jiribam village in Manipur.

"The cycle tour is to impel the government to initiate programmes on gender sensitization and lay out legislation to root out crimes and violence against women," she said.

During her tour, Leima was accompanied by members of the Joint Coalition Coordination Committee on NE India Cycle-II.

Leima is scheduled to meet school and college students here before resuming her journey tomorrow for the states of Tripura and Mizoram.
