Press Trust of India Amritsar
Akal Takht head Gurbachan Singh today condemned the Punjab government and police for using "force" to shift Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa from his home to hospital.

85-year-old Khalsa was on hunger strike at his home in Hassanpur village since January 17 seeking release of former Sikh militants lodged in different jails.

In a statement here, Singh said "that Bapu Surat's life is most precious for the Sikh community. The way Punjab police entered in his house at village Hassanpur yesterday and resorted lathi charge on innocent people, who were serving him, was highly condemnable."

Describing the police action as 'wrong', he said it reflected the high handedness of the authorities.

He asked the state government to create liaison with the Centre at the earliest for release of the Sikh prisoners lodged in the different jails of the nation on grounds of human rights and justice.
