Al-Jazeera America's incoming president says people interested in news will get a live program whenever they tune in, even in the middle of the night on a weekend.

The new cable news network debuts Aug 20.

Kate O'Brian, the longtime ABC News executive named this week as its president, said yesterday the network aims to distinguish itself with serious, in-depth reporting in hopes of standing out from existing TV news outlets.

Cable news networks have occasionally been criticized for being slow to respond to news overnight when repeats often air most recently when a Texas state senator held a filibuster to block abortion legislation.

O'Brian said Al-Jazeera America will have 12 domestic bureaus when it starts and could add more.
