All Mizoram Women Federation (AMWF) today urged the Mizoram government to expedite implementation of the Mizo Marriage, Divorce and Inheritance of Property Act, 2014.

Addressing a press conference in Aizawl, AMWF President Dr Jane R Ralte said that the Mizo Marriage, Divorce and Inheritance of Property Act 2014 was enacted by the state legislature on November 12, 2014, but was yet to be in force.

Ralte said that the AMWF appealed to the government to complete the formalities expeditiously, including drafting of the rules and notification of the act.

The new law would allow women to have rights in divorce cases and also to claim properties in case of divorce or the death of husband.

The women, in accordance with the Mizo Customary Law did not have any say in divorce as the husband could divorce his wife at will and the wife was deprived of any property in the strict patriarchal society.

The AMWF leaders lauded the state government for reserving seats for women in the Aizawl Municipal Council and village council elections and appealed to the government to legislate a law reserving seats for women in the local councils within the Aizawl Municipal Council area.
