Assam's Sri Surya Pahar temporarily shut for repair

Sri Surya Pahar, an archaeological site in Lower Assam, will remain close till February 21 for repair works.

Under the jurisdiction of Guwahati Circle of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Sri Surya Pahar is located 14 km east of Goalpara town in Lower Assam of the Brahmaputra valley.

"It is informed that Archaeological site museum Sri Surya Pahar under the jurisdiction of Guwahati Circle, ASI has been temporarily closed till February 21, 2016 for electrification and other repair works," ASI said in a notice.

The site, which was perhaps associated with the cult of sun worship since time immemorial, is a hilly terrain where several rock-cut Shivalingas, votive stupas and the deities of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain pantheon are scattered.
