A police officer was killed and another injured today after unknown gunmen opened fire on a checkpoint in Egypt's Sohag city.
Officer Ahmed Faroq Zidan was killed and his colleague Amr Hamza was injured when they were on duty, a security source said.
The attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi last year.

Many policemen and soldiers have been killed in the attacks.
In July, militants attacked a military checkpoint in Al-Wadi Al-Gedid governorate in southern Egypt, killing 21 Egyptian border guards.
The military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses that belong to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.
