To rein in rouge auto-rickshaw drivers in the city and stop them from overcharging the passengers, the West Bengal government today decided to take stern steps and press non-bailable charges against them.

The government has decided to set up a helpline for the passengers to register their complaints against them

From next Monday, a help-line number 1073 would be created which passengers can dial to register a complain against harassment by auto drivers, state transport minister Madan Mitra said.

The government has also formed a two-member committee comprising of State transport secretary and special commissioner of Kolkata Police Soumen Mitra to sort out anomalies in the fare structure on different routes.

"We will strictly enforce non-bailable offences against them on getting complaints. There is no rationalisation in the fare structure. Passengers are overcharged. The police will take stringent action now," Mitra said, adding auto stands would also be raided.
