Amid reports of him apprehending life threat from UP minister Azam Khan, the state government today said Dalit scholar Kanwal Bharti, who was arrested earlier this month for his alleged Facebook post on Durga Shakti Nagpal, can apply for security if he wants to.
"If Kanwal Bharti feels that there is threat to his life, he should apply for security... We will consider it," Principal Secretary R M Srivastava said in response to the media reports.
Srivastava said that there is a laid-down procedure to apply for security, only after which something can be done.

Yesterday, Bharti had reportedly expressed apprehension that Azam Khan can get him killed, and alleged that the minister's men were roaming around his house with guns.
The Dalit scholar was arrested in Rampur on August 6 over his comments on Facebook relating to suspension of IAS officer Nagpal.
He was later released on bail the same day.
