Big theatre groups from Mumbai to perform at Guwahati

Guwahati Theatre Festival will see performances by popular theatre production houses from Mumbai.

The five-day extravaganza comprising six English plays, began here today.

The inaugural play was Rajat Kapoor's "Hamlet- The Clown Prince" and the other plays to be staged during the week include "The Living Room," "2 to Tango 3 to Jive," "The Vagina Monologues," "The Truth of Womanhood" and "One on One" - all from leading theatre production houses of Mumbai.

"The purpose of the festival is to provide a platform for a diverse range of world-class performing groups to showcase their plays in the region and for people here to enjoy these plays," chairman of the Festival Sunit Jain said.
 

The festival has brought together well-known names of English theatre like Rajat Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin, Vinay Pathak, Saurabh Shukla, Rajit Kapur, Vrajesh Hirjee, Achint Kaur, Sadiya Siddiqui, Dolly Thakore and Shernaz Patel among others.

A two-day workshop will also be conducted during the festival by Saurabh Shukla, Neil Bhoopalam and Kalki with a view to promote theatre among the youth, Jain said.

The workshops will focus on voice and movement techniques with specific learning goals that will be demonstrated by the experts.

The theatre festival hopes to recognise and encourage new talent as well as create a new generation of theatre goers," Festival Director Asha Kuthari Chaudhuri said.
