Birbhum, Murshidabad celebrates Pranab's prez candidature

People exchanged greetings, distributed sweets and played with gulal in both places in celebration.
Celebration continued overnight at Miriti in Birbhum, the village where he was born and visits every year during Durga Puja which he religiously performs and at Kirnahar, the village three kms away where his elder sister Annapurna Banerjee stays.
Residents of both villages and nearby areas gathered at his ancestral 'Mukherjee House' since Friday evening when his candidature was announced.
A special yagna was held by hundreds of admirers of Mukherjee at Japeswar Shiva temple at Miriti yesterday and ended today.
Rabi Chattoraj, an official of the temple committee said, "Pranab babu contributed a lot to renovate and maintain this old temple. We prayed for his success. We hope that by the grace of Lord Shiva he will finally succeed."
Jubilant villagers visited the house of Annapurna Banerjee, with whom Mukherjee stays during the pujas, and shared sweets with her. The octogenarian sibling, however, cautioned the people saying celebrations should be restrained till the 'happy ending'. MORE
