Accusing the state government of disrespecting martyrs by announcing a paltry sum of Rs two lakh, the BJP here today demanded that an amount of Rs 10 lakh be given to the family members of the two soldiers from Bengal who died in the Uri terror attack in Kashmir.

In the worst attack on the Army in many years, heavily armed militants suspected to be from Pakistan-based JeM stormed an army base in Uri in Kashmir killing 18 jawans on Sunday prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to assert that those responsible "will not go "unpunished.

Among the 18 martyrs, two soldiers- Gangadhar Dolui and Biswajit Garai, were residents from Bengal.

The West Bengal government had announced a cash amount of Rs 2 lakh to the family members of the martyrs.

"No money can compensate loss of such bravehearts. But the paltry sum announced by the state government is an embarrassment for the image of the state. The state government has announced the same amount for the family members of the victims who died by consuming spurious liquor, the state gives doles of rs 2 lakhs to each clubs," the state BJP unit said in a statement.

"However only last year during the Haj pligrim incident in Mecca, the state had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family members of the victims. It clearly shows the pshyce of TMC. For them those who died in hooch tragedy and those who are martyrs are same. The release said.
