Protesting lack of safai karamcharis in his ward, a BJP councillor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation today sat on the floor of the house instead of taking his usual seat with other members.
As soon as the meeting began, Raghuvendra Shaukeen, a councillor from Ward number 44 Kamruddin Nagar sat down on the floor. When asked by the Mayor Azad Singh to take his seat, he refused to budge.
"My entire ward consists of unauthorized colonies and the Corporation does not get any work done there citing lack of jurisdiction. The drains in the area are all clogged. If I cannot do anything, why am I a councilor"? he said.

Shaukeen also complained that despite 135 safai karamcharis having been sanctioned for the area, no one had been recruited.
The issue was resolved when the Mayor promised that he would carry out an inspection of the area tomorrow and also directed officials to appoint the required number of workers in the ward.
The councillor resumed his seat when the ruling party members and senior leaders requested him to do so.
