CPI today said BJP's attempts to "polarise the people on communal lines" have been rejected by the people in the Assembly bypolls in four states.

"People have rejected the attempts of BJP to polarise the people on communal lines and the (bypoll) results are a clear blow to rabid communal politics," CPI National Secretary D Raja said here.

Responding to the poll results, he said the trend shown in the earlier Uttarakhand Assembly elections just after the Lok Sabha polls, where too BJP was defeated, "appears to be continuing".

He said BJP "tried hard to polarise the people in Uttar Pradesh but they gave a poor show despite such efforts".

Referring to the results and trends in BJP-ruled states of Rajasthan and Gujarat, Raja said BJP "cannot take the people for granted as they have rejected their politics of polarisation".

In West Bengal where BJP made a debut on its own winning a lone seat, the CPI leader said the development was "worrisome for the Left parties which should do some introspection".
