BJP to organize 'Save West Bengal' campaign

Accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of trying to wipe out the painful history of Partition by changing the state's name, BJP today said it would organize 'Save West Bengal' campaign against the decision.

"We have decided to organize a Save West Bengal Campaign in the state on August 16 to protest against the change of name of West Bengal. This name bears significance due to the painful history of partition. By trying to change the name TMC is trying to wipe off that history in order to appease a community," senior BJP leader Pratap Chakraborty said.

The state cabinet had yesterday decided to rename the state as Bengal after its earlier proposal of 'Paschim Bango', made in 2011 when Trinamool Congress took over power in the state for the first time, failed to get the green signal from the Centre.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh had yesterday questioned the purpose behind renaming the state.

"The state government takes decision on the basis of demand of the masses. My question is was there any such demand for a change? Because the TMC-run state government enjoys majority does not mean that they will do whatever they like," Ghosh had said.
