'Boardwalk Empire' to end after fifth season

Period drama 'Boardwalk Empire' will wrap up at the end of its fifth season, which is slated to debut this year.

The HBO series starring Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Kelly Macdonald, and Michael Shannon among others, was created by Terence Winter, reported Variety.

It was executive produced by Hollywood A-lister like Martin Scorsese, Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson, Tim Van Patten and Howard Korder among others.

"We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of 'Boardwalk Empire'. After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion," Winter said.
 

The series debuted on HBO in 2010 and has earned numerous Emmy and Golden Globe awards during the past four seasons.
