Boat capsize claims two lives, 2 persons still missing

Two persons died and as many are still missing today, a day after a boat carrying passengers capsized in Brahmani River in Dhenkanal district.

While the body of a nine-year-old boy, identified as Satyanarayan Swain was fished out of the river this morning, a girl Rubina Rout (19) who had been earlier rescued, passed away in hospital last night, a police officer said.

The incident occurred yesterday when about 40 residents of Surapatrapur village of Bhuban block were crossing the river on the boat to reach a Shiva temple, he said.

The overcrowded boat capsized as it lost balance mid-way, he said.
 

While most of the people in the boat were rescued, search operation is under way to trace two persons who are still missing, the officer said.

Teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force and fire brigade have been engaged to search and rescue the missing persons.

State Steel and Mines Minister Prafulla Mallick, the Dhenkanal District Collector and the SP had rushed to the spot yesterday and reviewed rescue operations.
