A man, allegedly a member of an inter-state gang of illicit liquor suppliers, has been arrested with 25 cartons of illegal alcohol meant to be supplied in Delhi and NCR.

Amit Saini, a resident of Rohini, was held with a consignment of illicit liquor while he was on his way to supply them to bootleggers in Noida, according to police.

A SUV which was used in transporting the stock was also seized from his possession.

"On the intervening night of Sunday and Monday a Mahindra SUV was signalled to stop but the driver made an attempt to escape and hit the police barricade.

"Police nabbed him and recovered the huge consignment of liquor from him," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) DR P Karunakaran.

Saini was running a travel agency by the name of Metro Travels. The impounded vehicle was attached with an IT company in Noida. While the vehicle was used for ferrying employees during day, it was used to smuggle liquor during night, said Karunakaran.

The SUV car is newly purchased and has more boot space than small cars which can store more number of cartons fetching good profit in a single round. The driver of the vehicle used to earn Rs 1,000 for each trip, police said.

Saini allegedly told police that he used to pick the liquor from Faridabad and take it to Noida. He also revealed that some smugglers make four to five rounds each night and use a different route on each trip to dodge police and Excise Department, police said.
