An eight-year-old boy died after falling into a drain while he was walking back home after playing at a local park in northwest Delhi's Rani Bagh area, police said today.

The incident took place around 9 PM yesterday. Anas was walking back home after playing at a local park in Srinagar Garden area with his cousin Mohsin (18) when he did not notice a broken culvert and fell into the drain beneath it.

His cousin Mohsin jumped into the drain to save him but failed. Mohsin came out of the drain and ran towards the locality, raising an alarm.

The police were informed and later Anas's body was fished out of the drain. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, a senior police official said.

He further said that the drain was maintained by the Public Works Department (PWD) and a case under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of IPC has been registered against unknown persons in connection with the incident at Rani Bagh police station.

Anas's father is a tailor and he has two younger sisters. The family lives at Shakurpur village near the park in which the incident took place. Anas studied in the second standard at a local school.
