A two-and-a-half-year-old boy fell into a 200-feet deep borewell in Rajasthan's Churu district following which Army personnel were pressed into service to rescue the trapped child.

The boy, Radheshyam, fell into the borewell last evening while he was trying to cross over the open shaft which was covered with a sack, police said today.

Army was called in by the district administration after the civil arrangements to rescue the boy did not deliver results.

"On request of the district administration, a team from Army comprising engineers and medical representative was pressed into service to pull the boy out," Defence spokesperson Col S D Goswami said.

He said that a team from South Western Command reached past midnight and has expedited rescue work along with the district administration.

Police said that two earth moving machines and tractors were pressed into service for digging land adjacent to the borewell soon after the incident occurred.
