A 35-year-old brick kiln worker was arrested in the wee hours today for allegedly killing an elderly man at a village here.

The accused, Dileep Mithya Jadhav, was caught by co-worker Anantya Gajnya Sawra while he was trying to steal food grains from his house at Pavili village in the district last nights.

Both the persons had a heated exchange following which Dileep, upset at being caught, picked up an iron rod and brutally attacked Anantya with it, Bhiwandi police station sub-inspector V G Shirsat said.

The victim collapsed on the spot. His neighbours rushed to help him but in vain. They later informed the police about the incident.

Police managed to nab the accused at around 12.30 AM.

The body has been sent for postmortem, police said, adding the accused has been booked under sections 302 (murder) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.
