BSF jawans and Central excise department personnel today seized 65,000 bottles of contraband Phensedyl, worth Rs one crore, from Bodhjungnagar, about 20 km from here.

Acting on a tip-off, the BSF and Customs personnel intercepted a truck at Bodjungnagar and during search recovered the bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup concealed under fruit cartons, a senior customs official said.

These cough syrups are used for intoxication in Bangladesh.

"From last night we along with the 195 battalion of BSF have been on hunt for these vehicles as we had specific information. Ultimately we spotted them at Bodhjungnagar industrial areas. This item is smuggled into Bangladesh as there is huge demand. The price will be more than Rs 1 crore," Customs Inspector Sraban Shaurab, a part of the search team, said.

To avoid police checkpoints the trucks were passing through a bypass towards Bhagalpur, a bordering area for smuggling the items to Bangladesh.

The driver and helper of the truck were missing.

Tripura share 856 km long border with Bangladesh, when some portion of the border is still unfenced and run through dense forests, making it porous and vulnerable.
