Panic gripped in Cherampadi in Gudalur Taluk in Nilgiris District, after a Magana elephant damaged a car and auto rickshaws parked at a bus stand late last night.

According to police, the elephant was in the vicinity for the last six months and moving around 30 villages in and around Pandalur, bordering Kerala, creating panic among the residents, as it destroyed crop in farms and tea estates.

Though the villagers had appealed to catch the pachyderm and take it to the nearby elephant camp in Theppakkadu, the officials had not not taken any action so far.

The last night incident created panic among the villagers, who have renewed their appeal for catching the Magana, by using Kumki (tamed elephant) and take it to the camp, police said.
