A case has been registered against Samajwadi Party candidate from Gautambudh Nagar, Nagendra Bhati for alleged violation of the Election Commission's Model Code of Conduct.

"A case has been lodged against Bhati under People's Representation Act," said Umesh Sinha, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh.

According to reports, Bhati had allegedly exhorting the party workers to violate poll code without fear to ensure 90 per cent voting in favour of the party.

He had asked his workers in Noida not to be worried about being caught by the police for violating poll code.

"After elections, all the cases against you would be withdrawn, don't worry," he had reportedly told his supporters.

When asked about UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's statement during a press conference earlier in the day that "sometimes things are said to mobilise workers", the CEO said, "he is not aware of the CM's remarks and would look into it."

Bhati was in news last year in connection with suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal.
