The US investigation agency FBI has provided a key software, to city-based Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), which helps in faster DNA sample analysis in the event of large-scale disasters.

CDFD today said that it is the first agency in India to get the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) software.

About sixty countries in the world are already using CODIS which is extremely useful for comparisons between hundreds or thousands of DNA profiles in the case of large-scale disasters, it said.

CDFD is using the CODIS currently for DNA profiling-based identification of the victims of last year's Uttarakhand floods.

US Consul General Michael Mullins today attended the concluding session of a program undertaken by CDFD and FBI for CODIS training here.

CDFD is an autonomous organisation funded by the Department of Biotechnology under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.
