Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today lauded the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI), an apex organisation of 30 member churches, on its centenary celebrations.

Chavan also hailed Christian community members for their efforts to maintain communal harmony and peace in the state and country.

"I compliment NCCI for carrying out the mission for past 100 years," Chavan said at a breakfast prayer meeting organised by NCCI.

The chief minister said secular credentials of UPA governments at state and Centre were helping in a big way in keeping people of all faiths together.

"The UPA has initiated many flagship programmes like Bharat Nirman, Food Security bill etc. Maharashtra government is all set to launch Food Security Scheme very soon," he added.

Chavan also extended Christmas greetings and his best wishes to NCCI for its centenary year celebrations.

State ministers Anil Deshmuh, Fauzia Khan and Rajendra Mulak were present on the occasion.

Rev Paul Dupare, Bishop of Church of North India (CNI), Rev Fr Jerome Pinto, Vicar General of Nagpur Roman Catholic Archdiocese, Ajay Ramteke and Nitin Sardar also attended the meeting.
