A communication from the Governor General of Canada David Lloyd Johnston, dated December 30 said the honour to Mannar was under 'Social Service' category and, "for his leadership in the global fight against malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency."
Mannar, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) would be soon appointed as an 'Officer in the Order of Canada' at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
Established in 1967, the 'Order of Canada,' is awarded to recognise a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to Canada.
Mannar graduated in technology (B Tech) from IIT Madras, Chennai in 1970 before moving to Northwestern University, USA for his post graduate work. Later, he became the President of Micronutrient Initiative (MI) in Ottawa and is known world-wide for his leadership in effective nutrition and development initiatives spanning over 35 years.
