Chile summons ambassador over Gaza offensive

Chile's government is summoning its ambassador home from Tel Aviv for consultations and is condemning what it calls the worsening of Israel's military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The foreign affairs ministry said Tuesday that Jorge Montero will return to Santiago soon.

The ministry says in a statement that Chile is "concerned and discouraged" by Israel's military operations and its "unleashing of a collective punishment on Gaza's Palestinian population."

It also says that the operations "breach fundamental norms in international humanitarian law," complaining about the more than 1,000 civilian victims and strikes on hospitals and schools.

Israel is trying to halt a wave of rocket and mortar fire from the Gaza Strip. The ministry says Chile condemns those attacks as well, but says Israel's response is disproportionate.
