A 17-year-old son of a well-known Chinese Army General was today indicted for a gang rape amid public criticism that the case is being delayed due to his powerful connections.

Li Tianyi, the son of Li Shuangjiang, a famous singer of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), would be put on trial along with four others who allegedly took part in the gang rape at a Beijing hotel in February, state-run CCTV reported.

If convicted, Li Tianyi could be sentenced to three to 10 years, media report said.

Li Shuangjiang, 72, is famous in China for singing patriotic songs besides starring in television galas.

He is also the Dean of the music department of the PLA Academy of Arts holding a the rank of a General.

Li Tianyi's arrest was approved by China's judicial authorities after questions were raised about the delay in his trial.

This is not the junior Li's first run-in with police.

Li Tianyi and another teenager attacked a couple who allegedly blocked their driveway near the entrance of a residential community in Beijing two years ago.

He was later sent to a government correctional facility for one year but reportedly released in six months.
