Chief Justice Altamas Kabir today laid down foundation stones for two new buildings in the Delhi High Court premises for 15 new courtrooms and other facilities including lawyers' chambers to cope up with rise in cases.

"With the increase in number of population and number of cases, it becomes sometime difficult to handle the activities in the courts. Space is required not only for litigants and judges but also for staff, legal aid facilities and mediation purposes," the CJI said.

He laid the foundation stones for the buildings which would be named as 'C' and 'S' blocks and they will consist 15 new court rooms, 9 joint registrars' rooms and the administrative branch will have a reference hall, lawyers' chambers and also a centre for the security personnel.

The new blocks, which would be ready by December 2015, will cost around Rs 170 crores.

Besides the CJI, Delhi High Court Chief Justice D Murugesan and other judges also graced the occasion.
