Actor-director Sacha Baron Cohen has quit singer Freddie Mercury biopic over creative differences with the remaining members of Queen.

'The Dictator' star, who has a strong resemblance to the gay singing icon, was in talks to play Mercury but he has pulled out, reported Deadline.

The differences occured over the content of the movie. The band wanted to make more of a PG movie about Queen but Cohen was more keen on doing a gritty R-rated tell-all on the singer.

Cohen had brought in Peter Morgan to write and various directors including David Fincher and Tom Hooper to develop the project for himself.

However, band did not approve any of them and the creative difference led to Cohen's departure from the project.

Film is set at Sony Pictures and GK Films. Graham King and Tim Headington are producing with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal and Queen Films.
