Congress central leadership has asked the state units to speed up their membership drive so that the organisational elections are completed in 2015 as per schedule.

Congress sources said that letters in this regard were sent yesterday mentioning specific schedule for each state.

The move comes just days after a senior Congress leader talked about the need to strengthen the party's organisational structure while lamenting that not much attention was given to the organisation when it was in power.

Janardan Dwivedi, who is the General Secretary in-charge of organisation, had said this week that holding organisational elections is currently the biggest priority for the party in his view.

Dwivedi's remarks are significant as organisational weakness was stated as one of the key reasons for the party's debacle in Lok Sabha polls as well as previous Assembly polls in states including Uttar Pradesh.

Noting that there was need to pay attention to the organisation, he had said that since organisational elections are to be completed in 2015, the membership drive needs to be speeded up.
