A contempt petition has been filed against senior officials of Chennai Corporation, Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board and Chennai Police for not complying with their undertakings before the Madras High Court to remove encroachments in and around Parry's Corner in the city.

When the matter came up for hearing, the First Bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Kumar Agrawal and Justice M Sathyanarayanan, ordered issue of notice to the Slum Clearance Board, enabling them to file a reply by August 29.

Social activist K R Ramaswamy, in his contempt petition contended that the authorities had not adhered to the undertaking given by them that the huts in and around Parry's Corner would be removed.

He also alleged that the ruling party's office bearers were interfering in the functioning of the officials and were objecting to the removal of encroachments.

Unless the authorities were punished for not complying with their undertakings given to the court, the problem of encroachments would not be solved, he said.
