In a unique convocation, degrees, diplomas and certificates will be awarded to prisoners inside the Burail jail here for the first time.

The convocation will be held soon after necessary clearances from authorities, Additional Inspector General (Prisons), Balbir Singh said today.

The convocation has been planned to boost the morale of prisoners who have studied to earn degrees, besides acting as motivation for other inmates who are keen to study, he said.

Degrees, diplomas and certificates in various disciplines will be awarded to prisoners, who passed their examinations last year, Singh said.

The Burail jail has a study centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University and the prison has a tie-up with the Education Department here.

"Those inmates willing to study, are facilitated and provided with all help. They can enrol for various courses and then special arrangements are made to conduct examinations inside the jail," he said adding, the subjects in demand include history, public administration, law, sociology and religious studies.

Nearly 700 prisoners are lodged in the jail including many dreaded criminals.
