A couple today jumped in front of a speeding train near Palsit station in Burdwan district, leaving their two-and-half year old daughter on the platform, the police said.
Kartik Karmakar (32) and Puja Karmakar (21) used to work as daily labourers and stayed at a rented accommodation near the railway station with their six-year old son Pratap and daughter Priyanka, a senior officer of Memari police station said.
The couple got married in 2015 and moved to Palsit from their village in Karamda, the officer said adding, initial investigations have indicated that poverty could one of the reason which drove the couple to take the extreme step.
"The couple left their daughter on the platform and jumped in front of Howrah-bound Down Hool Express. They died instantly. The bodies have been recovered and sent for post mortem," said OC, GRP, Diptesh Chattopadhyay.
