The overflowing water discharged from Hathni Kund barrage today raised the level of Yamuna in Kairana area, damaging crops on the river bank here in Shamli district.

The washed away harvest included bottle gourd and cucumber, with the agricultural area damaged due to the discharged water from the barrage.

"The problem erupted when extra water from Hathni Kund was released in Yamuna and the river overflowed in Kairana," Suresh Kumar Mishra, sub-divisional magistrate of Kairana said.

The flood out-posts have been put on alert to watch the water levels, he added.

Meanwhile, the affected farmers said they have lost their crops worth lakhs of rupees.
