Customs officer arrested in gold smuggling case

CBI has arrested Assistant Commissioner of Customs in connection with aiding the smuggling of about 20 kgs of gold, which was seized from two women passengers at the airport here last month.

The Indian Revenue Service officer R Anil Kumar was arrested last night along with his driver Ranjith, CBI sources said.

The driver was arrested after some gifts allegedly given by Faiz, prime accused in the case, to Anil Kumar, was recovered from his house.

Anil Kumar and Ranjith were produced before the CBI court this morning.

With the arrest of Anil Kumar, three customs officers have so far been arrested in the case.
 

Deputy commissioner C Madhavan and Preventive Officer Sunil Kumar were earlier arrested by the CBI.

Customs officials had arrested the two women-- Asifa, Arifa and her husband Harris from Nedumabassery airport on September 19.
