Customs official, wife get 2 years jail in DA case

A Customs official and his wife were today sentenced to two years imprisonment by a CBI court here in a Rs 44.79 lakh disproportionate assets case.

IX Additional Special Judge for CBI cases G Saravanan also imposed a fine of Rs 50,00 each on K S Kuppan, Preventive Officer of Customs House here, and his wife Geetha, a stenographer and personal assistant at Central Ware Housing Corporation.

The court also ordered confiscation of the disproportionate assets worth Rs 44.79 lakh acquired during 2000 and 2008, a CBI release said.

Based on an allegation that Kuppan and his wife had acquired assets disproportionate to their known sources of income, CBI had registered a case.
 

Investigation showed that the two public servants acquired assets worth Rs 82.10 lakh as against their known sources of income of Rs 43.40 lakh between March 2000 and January 2008 and incurred an expenditure of Rs 9.80 lakh.

The disproportionate assets held by them was to the tune of Rs. 44,79,283, it said.

CBI had filed a chargesheet against the accused under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
