Opposition Congress in Kerala today slammed the resolution passed by Tamil Nadu Assembly against Kerala government's plan to construct a dam on Siruvani river, saying it was an "infringement" on the state's rights.

"The river is flowing through Kerala and so the state has the right to construct the dam," Opposition leader in the state Assembly Ramesh Chennithala said.

"TN's help or advise is not needed on the matter. There is no room for the fears expressed by the Tamil Nadu assembly on the matter," he said in a statement here.

"The Kerala government has made it clear earlier itself that the sharing of waters with Tamil Nadu will continue. So there is no need for any fears on this score," he said.

Taking all these matters into consideration, the Centre had given permission for the Environment Impact Assessment for the Attappady Valley Irrigation project, Chennithala said.

Yesterday, the Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Centre not to grant clearance to Kerala and Karnataka to take up any project in Cauvery basin till the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee comes into force and court cases in this regard were settled.

The resolution also urged the Centre not to accept an Environment Ministry committee's recommendation allowing Kerala to conduct the assessment.
