Delhi BJP for raising ceiling of poll expenses

Delhi BJP today expressed unhappiness over Election Commission's decision to keep the expenditure ceiling for each candidate for the upcoming assembly polls at Rs 14 lakh, saying it should be increased.

"Rs 14 lakh maximum ceiling fixed by the Election Commission is an unrealistic figure keeping in view the increased expenditure for campaigns. The Commission should be more pragmatic in its approach considering all factors," Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said.

Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi Vijay Dev had yesterday said that the Commission decided to keep the ceiling at Rs 14 lakh.

"Fuel prices have sky-rocketed, it is simply not feasible to manage the expenditure under such constraints. We expect the Election Commission to raise the ceiling to roughly Rs 25 lakh," he said.

"If the Commission fails to take cognisance of this issue, the political parties can not be held guilty for breaching the ceiling," Goel said.

On Delhi University Students Union polls, the BJP leader alleged that NSUI candidates are resorting to "unwarranted methods" to win the election.

"Whatever Congress-backed NSUI has done during campaigning for polls is shocking. There have been reports of candidates using FM channels for advertising purpose. They are also using unfair means to win support," he said.
