Demand in RS to accord statehood to both Jammu and Kashmir

A demand was raised in Rajya Sabha today to accord statehood to Jammu and Kashmir in order to promote development of the region.

Raising the issue through a special mention, Narendra Kumar Kashyap (BSP) said the region has suffered a lot due to internal disturbances and status of separate states to Jammu & Kashmire would result in growth of the region.

He said both Jammu & Kashmir have adequate infrastructure needed for states.

At the same time, Kashyap demanded giving Union Territory status to both Leh and Ladakh regions while hailing the step for creation of separate Telangana.

Raising another issue, Chowdhary Munavver Saleem (SP) demanded institution of "an inquiry and taking strict action against officials responsible for custodial deaths of prisoners belonging to minority community in Tihar Jail."
 

Saleem said two persons hailing from minority community - Javed and Nadeem - died there recently and the matter needed central intervention for punishment to the guilty officials.

Barun Mukherji (AIFB) sought setting up a National Institute of Library & Information Science in the country.

Ram Vilas Paswan (LJP) demanded adequate compensation and rehabilitation of people affected by floods and drought in Bihar.

Purushottam Khodabhai Rupala (BJP) stressed the need for setting up an effective mechanism to curb the sale of spurious medicines in the country.
