Directing a play no mean feat: Rajit Kapur

Thespian Rajit Kapur has said he finds directing a play more difficult than acting.

A director is like the captain of a ship, he has more control over the production, but with power comes responsibilities, Kapur, who was recently here to stage his directorial venture, 'The Glass Menagerie', told PTI.

"For me, being an actor is easier. It is something I have been doing for the past 35 years. The director's hat is relatively new," the national award-winning actor said.

Asked about the audience base for English plays in the country, he said, youngsters are thronging theatre halls more than ever before.

"We find more 20-year-olds in the audience these days. A very positive sign indeed!"

Kapur said he was happy with the response he received here for his new play.

"We have been bringing most of our productions to Kolkata. This city has always been on our agenda. But lack of sponsorship is slowing down the theatre scene in the city," he said.

The state government and other cultural associations need to support commercial theatre, the actor-turned-director opined.

Kapur shot to fame with his portrayal of detective Byomkesh Bakshi on television. Over the years, his performances in films and plays have received critical acclaim from several quarters.

Talking about 'The Glass Menagerie', he said this melancholic family drama, written by Tennessee Williams, has been performed in several countries over the last 60 to 70 years.

"As it (the play) deals with a family, it somehow connects with almost everybody. We premiered this production at the Prithvi Festival in 2013 and have staged over 30 shows across India," the 57-year old thespian said.
