Discharging effluents of temple: HC orders notice to officials

Madras High Court today ordered serving of notice to Tuticorin District Collector and Executive Officer of Tiruchendur Sri Subramaniyaswamy temple on a PIL seeking to restrain the temple from discharging effluents of the temple cottages into the nearby sea.

The petitioner. Manalmendu M Suresh, said he had represented to the District Collector and other officials to build a separate septic tank for the toilets of the canteen and cottages.

Tamil Nadu Pollution Control board had also been requested to take action against the temple and stop polluting the sea, which had forwarded to the panchayat Executive Officer.

Several protests were held against discharging the effluents into the sea. However, no action had been taken so far, the petitioner said.
 

A large number of people were taking bath in the sea and the effluents would affect their health, the petitioner said and sought the court's intervention to stop the illegal discharge into the sea.
